President’s Report
On behalf of the Prince George Ringette Board, I would like to review some of the work that your Board has been doing during the 2008/2009 season.
• Back in the summer of 2008 we adopted the on-line registration program to allow registration on-line for those wanting this service.
• Our registration numbers are up 29 players over last year. We are at 155 players! Thank you to all parents and players helping to promote our sport!
• We were successful in obtaining Gaming Funds in August 2008 to assist with the operation of our annual programs.
• The Westerns Host Committee have now closed their books. A surplus of over $13,000 has been returned to the PGRA General Account! Thank you to the Westerns Host Committee and all volunteers for hosting this successful event.
• In September we held coaching and officiating clinics. Stay tuned as there will be more clinics planned for this spring and fall.
• The Board completed and adopted a Team Selection Policy in September 2008 (see PGRA website under the Administration tab). This is one of four local policies we have developed to help guide our association.
• For the first time in 28 years, PGRA forms an Open Team. Many past players have returned to Ringette now that we have this team in place.
• We have started work on setting up a University Ringette team. University Ringette is expanding rapidly in Canada allowing players to carry on playing Ringette while getting their post-secondary education. Although we were not successful in getting this team set up for 2008/09, we hope to have a team in place for the 2009/10 season.
• We held a Bring a Friend event during October on a school Pro-D day. This turned out to be very successful in getting players out with friends. We also saw many first-time players attend through seeing the event advertised locally. We were successful in getting 1 new registration. We will have one more session in March prior to the end of the season.
• The Joy Hoffman Ringette Tournament was a success. Thank you to all volunteers who helped run this tournament. Tim Horton’s donated participation medals to the Bunny Division while PGRA purchased participation medals for the Novice Division.
• Santa Skate was a success. Thank you to all volunteers especially Santa.
• We have 5 teams committed and payment has been made by PGRA for attendance at this years BC Provincial Championships. Petite A (pending retreat acceptance to ‘B’ level), Tween B, Junior A, Belle A, and Open A. We also have the Juniors, Belles, and Open committed to attend the Western Canadian Ringette Championships if they are successful in the Provincial Championships.

Northern League Tournaments (Terrace, Prince George, Quesnel, Houston). It is important that all teams support these tournaments. These games essentially form our “league games” and their results are used to determine which teams are eligible to attend the Provincial Championships. The results are also used to assess if a team should be granted a retreat to a lower level.

Annual General Meeting
Over the next few weeks we will be preparing for the upcoming Annual General Meeting. The AGM will be Monday March 30th at the Coliseum. Pizza, pop, and skating. Positions available on the Board will be posted soon.

Thank you and enjoy the remainder of the season.
Rick Girard, President PGRA

British Columbia Coaches Week, an initiative of Coaches Association of BC, focuses on the recruitment, development and celebration of sport coaches at events right across the province.
Prince George is one of seven communities province-wide that hosted a "Coaching Conference" during the celebration week. Coaches of athletes at all levels, ranging from the recreational participant to Olympic level competitors, were invited to attend the day-long conference which was offered at no cost through the support of Spectra Energy.
An Official Proclamation proclaiming Coaches Week has been issued by the Province of British Columbia.
Presentations honouring local volunteer coaches for their contributions to the community was also made. “The volunteer coach is one of the most valued members of our community. They are the ones who spend weekends learning their craft, and then spend countless hours after work coaching the young neighbourhood athletes in their sport,” says Gordon May, Executive Director of the Coaches Association of BC (CABC). “They give up their own family and personal time to develop not just better athletes, but to develop better people.”

Congratulations to Madeleine Crandell

Madeleine Crandell was a recipient of the CABC "Certificate of Appreciation" in recognition of valuable contributions to Coaching in British Columbia.
Madeleine also received a "Certificate of Recognition" for her contribution in coaching in Northern BC from Shirley Bond, MLA, Minister of Education.

Time to Practice or Compete
When it’s time to practice or play, you’ll get energy from the foods you’ve been eating all week. But it’s still a good idea to eat well on that day. If you’re going to eat a meal, have it 2 to 4 hours before practice or game time. If you have a full stomach, your body will need to spend energy digesting food, leaving less for you to use in your game or practice. The best pregame meal includes carbohydrates and protein for energy, but is low in fat and fiber, which can slow digestion. But you don’t want to be hungry either. Bring a snack, especially for long practices, competitions, or all-day events. Half a sandwich, fresh or dried fruit, or a small handful of nuts are all good snacks. Sports bars, or energy bars, are convenient, but they aren’t necessary for athletes. You can get the same energy from healthy foods. Avoid sugary stuff like sodas or candy bars right before you practice or compete. You might get a little energy boost, but it will fade fast, leaving you feeling drained. But eating and drinking the right stuff will help you play your best. Now, go out there and have a great season!

Many players have asked me about what is the best thing to eat after a ringette game. In general, if you are only playing in one game for the day you need not worry about your recovery diet because you have enough time to refuel your glycogen stores before your next workout (presumably the following day). However, if you are in a tournament and are going to be playing 2 or maybe even 3 games in one day, you should pay more attention to when and what you are consuming. After a game, your top priority should be to re-hydrate and replace the fluids lost by sweating. A couple of examples of how players can replace their fluids are: drinking water, eating watery foods (such as watermelon, oranges, soups, etc.,) drinking milk, and drinking fruit juices, etc. You will know that you are adequately hydrated by the frequency and colour of your urine (you should need to urinate frequently with your urine a clear, pale yellow). Be aware that highcarbohydrate sports drinks and powders can re-hydrate your system while increasing your glycogen stores; however, they lack most of the minerals and vitamins that natural fruit juice and other more wholesome beverages and foods offer. Secondly, if competing in a tournament, athletes need to try and refuel their glycogen stores to ensure there is adequate energy available for the following game. Ideally, players should aim to consume carbohydrate-rich foods and/or beverages within 20 minutes after a game. During this “20 minute window” the body can rapidly absorb the much needed energy and begin to replace the lost glycogen. A great beverage to consume between games in the dressing room is a cup of chocolate milk, as it has a good ratio of carbohydrate to protein and it also contributes to re-hydrating the athlete. Remember, if you are only playing one game during a day, then re-fuelling immediately after is not a huge priority. It becomes more important after harder, intense exercise that lasts for 60minutes or more and when you are competing in more than one game per day.
