British Columbia Coaches Week
September 20 – 27, 2008
British Columbia Coaches Week, an initiative of Coaches Association of BC, focuses on the recruitment, development and celebration of sport coaches at events right across the province.
Prince George is one of seven communities province-wide that hosted a "Coaching Conference" during the celebration week. Coaches of athletes at all levels, ranging from the recreational participant to Olympic level competitors, were invited to attend the day-long conference which was offered at no cost through the support of Spectra Energy.
An Official Proclamation proclaiming Coaches Week has been issued by the Province of British Columbia.
Presentations honouring local volunteer coaches for their contributions to the community was also made. “The volunteer coach is one of the most valued members of our community. They are the ones who spend weekends learning their craft, and then spend countless hours after work coaching the young neighbourhood athletes in their sport,” says Gordon May, Executive Director of the Coaches Association of BC (CABC). “They give up their own family and personal time to develop not just better athletes, but to develop better people.”
